Not sure why I thought of Andrew when I saw this but I did. 😀 Andrew hearts pennies? I dunno. Anyways, a couple of days ago I was talking about how even flat, seemingly 2-D can have a nice deep, textured 3-D look so here it is. Ta da. Not award winning but shows my point anyways. The problem with this picture was reflection and light. Since I was using a handheld speedlight, there were certain spots that would cause the penny to be illuminated too much or not enough. Just keep taking pictures and try to learn how to deal with the angles. The second problem was the my speedlight can only go down to 1/128th power. With such small objects, that is often too powerful. I conjured up a mini light tent using 3X5 index cards to lower the power even more and that also helped add a little bit of softess to the image. Notice the nice soft falloff? If not, go back to Strobist 102.
